Seven Deadly Sins: Sloth

The second volume of Seven Deadly Sins, A YA Anthology is due to be released shortly. I’m going to whet your appetite for more excellent YA stories from Scribophile members.

Sloth. (/ˈsloʊθ/ SLOHTH, /ˈslɒθ/ SLOTH/) 1. Failure to do things one should. 2. A wasting due to lack of use; concerns a person, place, thing, skill or tangible ideal that would require maintenance, refinement or support to continue to exist. 3. Evil that exists when good men fail to act.

The writers of the Seven Deadly Sins Anthology celebrate and pay tribute to the emotional and mental turmoil that is being a teenager. Fourteen authors, fourteen stories. One theme: Sloth.

Five Definitions of Sloth, With Examples by Rae Kennedy

Good things can happen in foster homes. Terrible things can happen in foster homes, things no one ever wants to discuss. When her foster mother requests a written task, Maisie takes the opportunity to write a letter to the authorities that will reveal years of neglect, abuse and alcoholism. The question is: will they believe her?

Rae Kennedy works for a Sixth Form College in Hampshire, England. Her hobbies include eating avocado sandwiches and sitting in libraries pretending to write. She hates slugs.

Micro-motivity by Chris Kennedy

Greg wasn’t like the rest of the kids in his class. He had to forego college in order to run the Youth Hostel his stepfather owned. But Greg didn’t mind at all. He enjoyed cooking for the guests and getting to know them. He had a time schedule to get everything done, along with an amazing system to encourage the visitors to help out. Then what was the problem with his stepfather?

Chris Kennedy lives in Hampshire and works for a modern communications company when he isn’t typing or researching for his master’s degree. He took up writing at the insistence of his wonderful wife and three clever children so that he could ‘stop annoying them.’ Once he started he found he couldn’t stop. His perfect holiday is a sunny Mediterranean beach as close as possible to the last remains of an ancient civilization. That’s where he gets his ideas.

Eternal Life by Yvette O’Kay

A word, nothing but a simple word created a being of pure energy. It vampires off of us, our actions are what sustains it’s life. You can almost never see it. But in the middle of the night when you are sitting all alone and the only light is coming from the television, you can see it at work. You reach for the remote, but it’s gone… and you discover you’re too lazy to go and get it. So, instead, you fall asleep, and it survives.

Yvette O’Kay is a writing goddess that has been writing ever since she was a little girl. She is from New York and this is her very first publication. Yvette is a full time student and author and often has troubles balancing the two, but in the end the satisfaction of finishing a story outweighs anything else for her.

the truth by Blake Parker

Everyone around Olivia is frustrated that she isn’t living up to her potential. Her mother tells her she won’t put up with an indolent teenager. Her teacher gazes upon her with clear disappointment. But there is someone who knows the truth about Olivia.

Blake Parker is of the female gender, since the name itself doesn’t give that away. Physically, she resides in Canada. Otherwise, she lives in the contrivance of whatever place she’s wanting to visit – like Oslo. At times, Blake’s love of travel merges her imagination with reality. In day-to-day life, Blake loves paradoxes. For example, the paradox of supporting her obsession with scotch on a limited budget. Or the paradox of running her own business as a social media consultant while, to the chagrin of her friends, never actually using social media for personal use. Somewhere, in between the paradoxes and fantasy of living in far-away places, Blake finds the time, and enjoyment, to write.

One More Level by John Rickett

In the game, World of Dragons, Josh has mountains of gold, a sprawling castle and a slew of followers. At home, his soccer gear sits unused in the corner; he hasn’t moved from his chair in months; urine stains his pant legs. His mother worries she’s losing her son to the virtual world. As Josh wastes away, both realize that when you hate your reality, you construct another.

John Rickett dwells in the armpit of America, where he claws at the walls, escaping his suburban nightmare by performing woodworking ninjutsu and moonlighting as a word-sorcerer. His post-apocolyptic fairytale retelling, Three Brittle pigs, recently appeared in The Molotov Cocktail and has been selected to appear in their first print anthology.

Treasures by K.T. Stephens

Jay made a mistake. Now his mom sends him across the country to live with his dad, who he hasn’t seen since he was three years old. Jay is thrust into a world of bachelorhood and unreasonable rules. After his first day at the new school, his father insists on a schedule change: drop his favorite class to do community service. He complies, but when he arrives at the job, Jay finds much more than yard work: an old man with a strange story, a treasure hunt involving his father and a foreigner who has been searching for peace for over sixty years. But the biggest surprise is yet to come.

K.T. Stephens writes YA and children’s books and is especially enamored of anything having to do with the circus. Her story, “Balancing Act,” appears in Seven Deadly Sins, A YA Anthology, Volume 1: Pride. K.T.’s stories tend to be multi-generational, as she loves to explore the past and how it relates to the present. Her adult persona, Katie Stephens, has numerous literary and romance publications, the most recent through Mélange Publishing. Although her grown children are scattered east and west across the country, she lives solidly in mid-America with two kitties and a husband who keeps asking when she’s really going to retire.

By Birth Alone by M.J. Travis

Seventeen-year-old Brian Whitley takes his athletic abilities for granted. While the team’s second-string quarterback works tirelessly on the field, Brian skips practices, stays up late and feels entitled to the favors and admiration that come from being East Boone High’s winning quarterback. With the State Championship game only a few days away, will Brian realize too late that putting in the effort benefits not only the team, but himself?

M.J. Travis is a native southern Californian who began writing four years ago when her second child was no longer in need of constant supervision. Her love of books began at an early age. She mostly writes short stories for YA and children, but has just started to leap into the workings of a novel. “By Birth Alone” is her first publication.

THE ARTIST AND LAYOUT EDITOR:

Luke Spooner, a.k.a. ‘Carrion House’ and ‘Hoodwink House,’ currently lives and works in the South of England. Having graduated from the University of Portsmouth with a first class degree he is now a full-time illustrator and writer for just about any project that piques his interest. Despite regular forays into children’s books and fairy tales, for which he has won awards for literary and artistic merit, his true love is anything macabre, melancholy or dark in nature and essence. He believes that the job of putting someone else’s words into a visual form, to accompany and support their text, is a massive responsibility as well as being something he truly treasures.

Luke can be found on Facebook, and at his Carrion House and Hoodwink House websites.

If you like this cover, you should see his other designs at freeze frame fiction!

D.Laserbeam, our Layout Editor, has been an icon at Scribophile for many years, so it’s no wonder we jumped at the chance to have Dino do the e-book formatting for the SDS anthologies. Dino writes, edits (Laserbeam Edits), is the founder & editor-in-chief of freeze frame fiction, and oh, yeah–is an engineer in real life!

Genre: Interracial/Multicultural Historical Romance

Blurb:

Zachariah, a mulatto slave, doesn’t find much reason to be happy after being sold away from his mother and sister. However, he keeps having dreams of a beautiful woman with amber skin and this gives him some measure of joy. On a cold winter’s day, he is shocked to meet his fantasy woman in the flesh. Drawn to her, he feels compelled to help her the only way he can—by giving her his warm coat.

Lillian Hildebrand is a member of the Cherokee elite, but she doesn’t feel like a socialite on the Trail of Tears. After meeting the charming and kind-hearted white one held in chains, she begins having reoccurring dreams of him. As if cast into her dream catcher, Zachariah fills her dreams from that day forward. Since he continues to call to her in her dreams four years later, Lillian is convinced the ancestors have deemed they meet again.

With the help of her wealthy white brother-in-law, she tracks Zachariah to the Kentucky restaurant he helps manage. Her plans for the future run deeper than Zachariah ever imagined. Will her attempt to help him pass as white and start life anew with her on the Indian reservation pay off, or spell disaster for them both?

Exclusive Excerpt:

Her hand felt smooth in his—like silk. He couldn’t believe his hand was on her waist. He wanted to keep it there forever. Zachariah took a deep breath, but couldn’t calm his racing heart. Each step made him more nervous. They were so close he smelled her rose perfume. It was like being surrounded by the Garden of Eden.

She looked up, her emerald eyes locked with his, her lips spreading into a seductive, sultry smile.

An excited shiver spread up his spine, through his arms to his fingertips. He leaned in, his lips close to hers, inhaled her peppermint breath. What was he doing? He pulled back, his face hot.

They continued dancing and he stiffened. His face became stoic. He had to remember his place. He couldn’t kiss her.

After the sixth song, Lillian sat on the edge of the bed, her face glowing with new found freshness.

“Thank you, Zachary. I love dancing.”

“Thank you for teaching me to dance, Miss.”

Lillian lay down, stretched her arms above her head and yawned.

Zachariah shifted upon the balls of his feet and gnawed on his lip. He felt uncomfortable seeing her in that position, but he couldn’t tear his eyes away.

“It is a long boat ride. I will teach you many things,” she said. “You may go now. Shut the door behind you.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Zachariah said.

He walked into the parlor eagerly anticipating what she would teach him next.

A Scott Bell Novel!!

YL

Scott Bell, author.

Looks good, doesn’t it? Well, hold on to your armchair, because if you enjoy crime, mystery, a little romance, thrillers and good old-fashioned belly laughs, there’s a new kid on the block.

New as in “first novel” new. (Scott has several short story publications lurking around the universe.) My advice is to buy this book and beg, beg, beg for Scott to autograph it, because we’re witnessing the creation of a rising star in the genre.

And the best part? Scott has “Yeager” sequels in progress as well as a few other irons in the fire—one about a smokin’ hot Texas Ranger.

[Okay, he might take a tiny bit of offense to that portrayal, but don’t let Scott’s descriptive prowess or sheer genius with action scenes fool you. He’s got some manly men between those pages. Hence his motto: What would John Wayne do?]

Head over to Red Adept Publishing and bookmark the page, and then mark your calendar for the July 21, 2015 release date. Check back here next month for a possible author interview! Congratulations, Scott!!

Yeager’s Law by Scott Bell

Abel Yeager is dead broke, down on his luck, and suffering from a serious case of what-the-hell-does-it-matter. His transition from active Marine to stateside long-haul trucker hit a wicked speed bump when his rig was involved in a wreck that claimed the life of a pregnant woman and laid him up for several months.

Back at work but deeply in debt, Yeager meets bookstore owner Charlie Buchanan in St. Louis and jumps at the chance to haul a load of remainder books to Austin for her. On the way south, a crew of truck thieves tracks his every move. But none of them know what Charlie’s ex has smuggled inside the book pallets, who he stole it from, or how far the owner will go to get it back. Charlie’s the first person Yeager has cared about in a long time, but as their bond deepens, so does the danger they’re in.

With enemy forces closing in, Yeager battles greed, corruption, and his own fatalism in a bid to hold true to Yeager’s First Law: come home at the end of the day.

 Author bio:

“My writing interests very much like my reading interests. Though I mainly write romance type novels with a spicy twist, I have lived what some might call a suspenseful life. As a survivor of stalking and sexual assault, I learned the ins and outs of the legal system pretty quickly. It helped to precipitate my interest in getting my law degree… that and the fact that I grew up around attorneys. So adding suspense to my writing is no big surprise to me or anyone that knows me.”

I am a born and raised small town Ohio girl, who moved to the Sunshine State after graduating from college. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English because I could not imagine doing anything else but reading and writing. It is such a pleasure to be able to share all the stories in my head!

Author bio:

Lea Bronsen likes her reads fast, hot, and edgy, and strives to give her own stories the same intensity. After venturing into dirty inner-city crime drama with her debut novel Wild Hearted, she divides her writing time between psychological thriller, romantic suspense, and erotic contemporary romance.

Story A Day In May, a.k.a. SADIM

Tell me that doesn’t sound like it should be whispered in the deep, dark recesses of a candlelit bedroom that contains a king-sized bed covered in black satin with various whips, chains and other nefarious devices strewn about the room. I’ll let you think on that for a minute or two or ten.

Okay, that’s enough.

I started Story a Day in May yesterday, but this year, instead of writing complete flash fiction/short stories, I’ll be working on my WIP. It’s due, completely edited, by September 15, so I figured this is a very good time to create the first draft. This is for a boxed set steamy Christmas Anthology. If anyone would like to keep up with the first draft, head on over to Scribophile and join George Well’s group. Blog access and passwords are posted there!

Keep writing, my friends!

Seven Deadly Sins: the illustrator and the layout editor

We asked our illustrator, Luke Spooner, how he came up with the central idea for the cover of our book and what he thought of when he heard of the theme for the Anthology.

“I really like the symbolism that surrounds the ideas of ‘the sins.’ It’s something that all humans can relate to, probably because we are nearly always somewhere on that spectrum at any given moment. There’s a very primal quality to the understanding of this particular set of emotions and thought patterns. Irrespective of language or culture, they seem to be universally recognised, and the opportunity to cobble that into some sort of visual interpretation is something that is both massive and rare.”

Pride Front Cover with text alternate

If you like this cover, you should see his other designs at freeze frame fiction and on his web site, Carrion House!

Our layout editor, D. Laserbeam, has been an icon at Scribophile for many years, so it’s no wonder we jumped at the chance to have Dino do the e-book formatting for the SDS anthologies. Dino writes, edits (Laserbeam Edits), is the founder & editor-in-chief of freeze frame fiction, and oh, yeah–is an engineer in real life!

Seven Deadly Sins: the authors

Masterpiece by J. C. Davis

J.C. Davis has been in love with books since she was old enough to start chewing on the covers. She’s since seen the error of her ways and spends her spare time reading books rather than drooling on them. A programmer by day, Ms. Davis writes YA fiction, the occasional short story and has far too many hobbies to keep up with. She lives in Dallas, Texas, with her husband, two kids and a hedgehog named Percy Jackson. Ms. Davis’s short stories have appeared in Spark: A Creative Anthology, Writing Tomorrow, Bastion Science Fiction Magazine and NewMyths.com.

The Hazel Crayon, by Wendy White Lees

Wendy White Lees was voted “Most Likely to be a Writer” by her 3rd grade class, which really made her mad because she was gunning for movie star. She concedes, however, that they were right, as she became a professional copywriter, and her dream job is to one day write for Sesame Street. Her fiction has appeared in Every Day FictionFree Flash FictionFifty Word Stories, and in 2014 she placed as a runner-up in the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest (an international literary competition to compose the worst possible opening sentence for a novel). Summer Rains, by E.N. Loizis

E.N. Loizis is a Greek writer trapped inside the body of a technical translator who lives in Germany. Her love for literature could be the result of the lack of Internet when she was growing up and for that she is eternally grateful. She has been published in Youth Imagination and her story “Till Death Us Do Part” appeared in Stupefying Stories. Two more of her stories are due for publication in Apocrypha and Abstractions and freeze frame fiction. She is working really hard on her ADD, so that she may finally complete her first novel one day.

When she’s not nursing, writing, or dreaming, Anita is travelling the world, people watching, and seeking out things that capture her imagination.

***

The Tasmanian Girl, by S. Sadedin

S. Sadedin is an evolutionary biologist who writes too much. Her favorite poet is Piet Hein. Most of her writing is about obscure science topics, such as why pregnancy is a war, and the horrifying truth behind menstruation. As a teenager she planned to save the world. (She still does. But don’t tell the adults, they’ll revoke her grown-up license.)

Balancing Act, by K.T. Stephens

K.T. Stephens writes YA and children’s books and is especially enamored of the circus. Just mention acrobats and strongmen and she’ll jump headfirst into this world of magic, color and precision and take you with her!  She also has published adult literature under the pseudonym Katie Stephens in Spark: A Creative Anthology and Mused—The Bella Online Literary Review. Her latest release is a romance story in the anthology “Love Least Expected” called Alphabetical Disorder. You’ll never believe it’s about the circus… or will you? K.T. lives in Ohio with her husband and three adorably obsessive felines.
